Blum Space Tower — Cut List for a Tall Pantry Unit with Internal Drawers
The Blum SPACE TOWER is one of the most popular tall larder/pantry solutions in modern kitchens. The concept: a single tall cabinet with one full-height door, but inside, the storage is split into multiple pull-out drawers at different heights. When you open the door, the entire SPACE TOWER frame slides out, giving you full access to every level. This guide provides the complete cut list for building the outer carcass and 6 internal wooden drawer boxes.
What Is a Space Tower?
A SPACE TOWER is a tall larder unit — typically 1950–2200 mm high — with a single door on the front. Behind the door sits a pull-out frame (the SPACE TOWER mechanism) that holds multiple drawers at different heights. The door is attached to the frame, so it opens automatically when you pull.
- Variable drawer heights let you store everything from spice jars (100 mm) to large pots (350 mm)
- The external look is one uniform door — no visible drawer fronts — giving a clean, minimal kitchen aesthetic
- Popular because people want a uniform door look without committing to one fixed shelf layout inside
- The entire frame slides out on runners, so you get full access to every level without reaching into a deep, dark cupboard
Dimensions & Specifications
The unit we're building:
- External carcass: 600 mm wide × 580 mm deep × 2100 mm tall
- Material: 18 mm hardwood plywood (carcass), 15 mm plywood (drawer boxes), 6 mm plywood (backs and drawer bases)
- Door: 18 mm MDF, 2096 × 596 mm full-overlay door on the cabinet face (2 mm gap to the outer edges all round)
- The carcass sits on a 150 mm plinth, so the top of the unit is at 2250 mm
Blum hardware required (purchased separately — not part of the cut list):
- 1× Blum SPACE TOWER frame (for 600 mm cabinet width)
- Blum LEGRABOX or TANDEMBOX drawer runners (one pair per drawer, lengths to match depth)
- Blum SERVO-DRIVE for soft-close (optional)
- Blum CLIP top hinges for the door
Outer Carcass Cut List
| Part | Qty | Length (mm) | Width (mm) | Material |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Side panel | 2 | 2100 | 580 | 18 mm ply |
| Top panel | 1 | 564 | 580 | 18 mm ply |
| Bottom panel | 1 | 564 | 580 | 18 mm ply |
| Fixed middle shelf | 1 | 564 | 560 | 18 mm ply |
| Top rail (rear) | 1 | 564 | 80 | 18 mm ply |
| Back panel | 1 | 2100 | 600 | 6 mm ply |
| Plinth board | 1 | 564 | 150 | 18 mm ply |
Internal width = 600 − (2 × 18) = 564 mm. The fixed middle shelf adds structural rigidity to a tall carcass and prevents racking. It is intentionally set back to 560 mm deep so the middle of the tower feels less cramped around the internal frame and access stays comfortable.
Drawer Configuration
The SPACE TOWER frame holds 6 drawers at different heights. Here is the layout from top to bottom:
| Position | Use | Internal Height (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| Top | Spice jars, small items | 100 |
| 2nd | Tins, packets | 150 |
| 3rd | Plates, bowls | 150 |
| 4th | Mixing bowls, appliances | 200 |
| 5th | Saucepans, stock pots | 250 |
| Bottom | Large pots, heavy items | 350 |
Heights are the usable internal drawer spaces, not a full stack-up of the 2100 mm carcass. The remaining height is taken up by the cabinet structure, the fixed shelf, the runner hardware, and the clearances between drawer levels. Consult Blum's planning guide for the exact frame positions.
Drawer Box Cut List
All drawer boxes are made from 15 mm plywood with 6 mm ply bases. They sit on Blum TANDEMBOX or LEGRABOX runners. Drawer width (external): 538 mm (564 mm internal carcass width minus 26 mm for runner clearance, 13 mm each side). Drawer depth: 500 mm (standard runner length).
| Drawer | Part | Qty | Length (mm) | Width (mm) | Material |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 mm Drawer | Front | 1 | 100 | 508 | 15 mm ply |
| 100 mm Drawer | Back | 1 | 80 | 508 | 15 mm ply |
| 100 mm Drawer | Side | 2 | 100 | 500 | 15 mm ply |
| 100 mm Drawer | Base | 1 | 524 | 493 | 6 mm ply |
| 150 mm Drawer | Front | 2 | 150 | 508 | 15 mm ply |
| 150 mm Drawer | Back | 2 | 130 | 508 | 15 mm ply |
| 150 mm Drawer | Side | 4 | 150 | 500 | 15 mm ply |
| 150 mm Drawer | Base | 2 | 524 | 493 | 6 mm ply |
| 200 mm Drawer | Front | 1 | 200 | 508 | 15 mm ply |
| 200 mm Drawer | Back | 1 | 180 | 508 | 15 mm ply |
| 200 mm Drawer | Side | 2 | 200 | 500 | 15 mm ply |
| 200 mm Drawer | Base | 1 | 524 | 493 | 6 mm ply |
| 250 mm Drawer | Front | 1 | 250 | 508 | 15 mm ply |
| 250 mm Drawer | Back | 1 | 230 | 508 | 15 mm ply |
| 250 mm Drawer | Side | 2 | 250 | 500 | 15 mm ply |
| 250 mm Drawer | Base | 1 | 524 | 493 | 6 mm ply |
| 350 mm Drawer | Front | 1 | 350 | 508 | 15 mm ply |
| 350 mm Drawer | Back | 1 | 330 | 508 | 15 mm ply |
| 350 mm Drawer | Side | 2 | 350 | 500 | 15 mm ply |
| 350 mm Drawer | Base | 1 | 524 | 493 | 6 mm ply |
Back panels are 20 mm shorter than fronts so the 6 mm base can slide in from the rear and the back can sit on top of it. That is why the base is 524 × 493 mm: 508 + (2 × 8) = 524 across the drawer, and 470 + 8 + 15 = 493 front to back. The 150 mm drawer quantities are doubled because there are two drawers at that height.
Sheet Count Estimate
- 18 mm plywood (2440 × 1220 mm): approximately 3 sheets (carcass)
- 15 mm plywood (2440 × 1220 mm): approximately 2 sheets (drawer boxes)
- 6 mm plywood (2440 × 1220 mm): approximately 2 sheets (backs + drawer bases)
- 18 mm MDF (2440 × 1220 mm): 1 sheet (door)
These are estimates. Paste the cut list into CutList to get an optimised cutting diagram and exact sheet count.
Assembly Tips
- Build the outer carcass first and check for square before adding the back panel — tall units are prone to racking
- The fixed middle shelf is essential for structural rigidity; glue and screw it in place
- Drill the SPACE TOWER frame mounting holes precisely using Blum's paper template (included with the hardware)
- For drawer boxes, rout a 6 × 8 mm groove in the front and side panels, 8 mm up from the bottom edge, let the base slide into those grooves, then fix the shorter back panel down on top of the base
- Sand all internal edges — you'll be reaching into these drawers daily
- The door panel should be lipped or edge-banded on all four edges before priming
